A Stunning Australian Coastal Home
How do you feel when you think about the coast? I’m instantly relaxed, thinking of lazy afternoons at the beach or on the water. I can hear the waves and smell the salt. It’s vacation. (And I would love to be there right now!)
This home in Portsea, Australia (near Melbourne), designed by MIM Design, embodies that calm coastal retreat vibe. It was designed as a “gallery-esque pavilion style coastal hideout for a large family.” The home incorporates a clean, modern aesthetic and the warmth of natural materials to evoke the location.
Now, can we talk for a minute about this kitchen?? Definitely some kitchen-envy going on right now. The details are beautiful. You can tell each element was considered. The hint of texture on the white cabinets, those to-die-for pendant lights, and the waterfall countertop on the island... and cleverly, the stone is brought from the countertops to the backsplash and wood niche. It’s all just the right amount. And I love the change to uneven subway tiles in the Butler’s pantry.
In a crazy connected age, we all search for spaces to breathe. By using soothing grays, whites, and wood tones throughout and balancing sleek textures with casual ones, MIM Design created a perfect retreat from the world in this home. There are slatted wood panels, knotted wool carpets, and natural stone benches; it all comes together beautifully in this casual, refined interior.
Did you notice the shower glass that's cut around the tile ledge? Or the pendant hanging above the sink? This home is tailored like a good suit. No gimmicks, frills, or feathers, just beautiful design that speaks for itself.
And every once in a while - in just the right spots - you’ll come across a burst of color in a hue reminiscent of the ocean. Deep and light blues, sea greens. Just enough to keep you guessing. I love the color change in the paneling here.
MIM Design created the perfect relaxing, minimalist space. By keeping the color scheme muted, they created a space you want to experience tactilely as well as visually. It awakens the senses while putting you at ease - just what we crave in a coastal retreat. Now I’m off to order plane tickets... ;)
